Quail/Dog Training

Dog Training

Training Fields

The club is a Missouri Department of Conservation Licensed Shooting Preserve which allows us to have Bobwhite Quail and chukars. We have two dog training areas, one large and one smaller, for the do-it-yourselfer. The smaller dog training area is approximately 10 acres and is designated a blank-gun-only puppy field. The larger dog training area is approximately 25 acres and can be used for complete training with quail. Birds are typically available between August to April. Costs for birds are posted in the birdhouse shed.

Running Your Dog

The procedure for running your dog in the field is to wait your turn. Do not go into the field while someone else is out training. Alternate fields to run or train your dog are the cleared area on the other side of the big lake or the puppy field by the club entrance. Read the club safety rules for gun handling and wear hunter orange when in the field.

Just For Puppies

Our puppy fields are completely enclosed to provide a safe training area. With ample field space for them to run and master commands, it is a great place to train your new puppy. NOTE: Only blank guns are allowed in the puppy field.

Water Areas

There are two lakes, one large and one small, which can be used for retriever training. "Shoot to Retrieve" trials and AKC Hunt tests are regularly held on the grounds around the lakes. Club members can also enjoy fishing or kayaking in the large lake.

Bird Program

Missouri Gun and Quail intends to keep the prices of birds low, and the current price is posted in the birdhouse shed. All payments for birds must be placed in the money drop-box in the shed. Members are also required to sign in on the logbook. Any birds removed from the property must have a yellow transportation tag applied. Each person using birds on the club property is required to have a Missouri Small Game Hunting License.

Bird Retrieval Procedure

Quail are located in the south pen. Birds are chased into the catch box by opening the south door and looking in. Their curiosity will lead them to walk into the catch box on their own. A pole located either on top of the pen, leaning against the fence, or inside the south door can be used to persuade the birds into the catch box if needed. Once the birds are inside the catch box, close the catch box door by undoing the clasp and lowering it. Shut and lock the south door by placing the clasp back on the door. Open the north door by the catch box, and reach into the catch box to retrieve your birds. Caught birds shall be placed in a sealed container. Ensure the north door is shut and locked. Payment for birds is on an honor system, so please pay for birds that are used or any that escaped when trying to catch them.

When leaving make sure that the bird pen doors are shut and have the locks applied. Ensure that no birds remain in the catch box with the catch box door shut. If any dead birds are removed from the pen please log these into the sign-in book and indicate the number that were dead and that they were removed so we can keep track of the loss. Please do not put your dead birds in any trash can on the club property. Throw birds into the woods if you do not want to keep them.

If you have any questions or if bird numbers get low (20 birds or less) please contact Rodney Albin.

NOTE: Quail pens are surrounded by an electric fence. Please use extreme caution when retrieving birds from the pen.
